Album Review: Gucci Mane’s “Mr. Davis”

The hip-hop album Mr. Davis by Gucci Mane was released on Friday, Oct. 13, 2017.

The album contains 17 songs and features various rap and hip-hop artists such as Migos, The Weeknd, and others.

Gucci Mane discusses past events in his life in the intro track “Work in Progress.” He talks about how he began his life in poverty. He shows how his life has changed due to his successes.

I enjoy this song because it parallels to his life. Also, the type of songs that tell an intriguing story while still keeping a good beat are very interesting to me. One theme of the song that I don’t really hear in hip-hop songs often is the humble theme, which I appreciate. For example, he talks about how his gifts are God given instead of saying that they all because of him

The outro to Mane’s album is entitled “Made It.” This song is a perfect conclusion to the album, considering the intro song is named “Work In Progress.” This song ties together the album because he connects to the beginning of the album’s humble tone and upbringing to his current affluence. I also like this song because of its placement in the album. This song is one of my favorite songs in the album.

One song that really caught my ear was the song “Enormous” featuring Ty Dolla $ign. I enjoy the change in tempo more than other songs in the album. The general slower tempo in this song created a more chill and calm feeling; however, this song still keeps the hip hop aspect when the rap verses come in. For example during the chorus of the song, the singer Ty Dolla $ign sings about three words per five seconds, then in the rap verse Gucci Mane sings seven words per five seconds. I also appreciate that it features Ty Dolla $ign, a well-liked artist of mine.

I also like “Curve,” featuring the Weeknd. The song starts with The Weeknd rapping then leads to him singing the chorus. After that it goes to a pattern of Gucci Mane and The Weeknd. This song could also be a change from many different types of songs in the albums considering The Weeknd’s contemporary R&B aspect he adds to the it. I personally like this song because I am a fan of The Weeknd and his singing and rapping adds variety to the sounds of the song, considering his different voice.

Another good song in this album is “Members Only.” The songs starts at a moderately fast beat then slows down during the chorus. I love the verse that has the same melody as the Chorus as well. The overall tone of this song paired with many artistic changes in tempo advanced this song into one of my favorites.

My favorite song in Mr. Davis, however, is the song “I Get The Bag.” This song features the famous group Migos, who add to the fast pace of the song. The chorus brings the song together because it is very catchy due to its unique beat.

I love the album Mr. Davis. The album displays great variety with many different tempos, beats and stories in the songs. This can be attributed to the many different types of features Gucci Mane chose to have in the album. Gucci Mane includes many different artist to feature in his album, varying from A$AP Rocky to Big Sean. Additionally, I love how Gucci Mane structures this album. I love how Gucci Mane starts with the intro song “Work In Progress” and concludes with “Made It.” To conclude, I recommend this album to those who enjoy the genre of hip hop, but also to those willing to try something new, considering this album offers many different styles of music.
