Campus set for summer improvements

Over the summer the Maintenance Department will manage a plethora of renovation and refurbishment projects in the classrooms, athletic facilities and other campus infrastructure, according to Senior Director of Facilities Management Michael McDermott.

A new air conditioning system will be installed to provide air conditioning to the locker rooms, coaches’ offices, trainor’s office, the Alumni room and the athletic equipment room on the second floor in Leavey Gymnasium.

According to McDermott this project is the first of two phases with a budget of $300,000. The construction is expected to last from June 1 to July 15. The second phase of this project will take place next summer, in which another air conditioning system will be installed to provide air conditioning for the multipurpose court in the gym.

Smith Field will also see a five-day renovation from June 6–11. The company, FieldTurf, will provide infill renovation services. FieldTurf staff will mix a new infill for the turf and regroom the field. According to McDermott the last time Smith Field was repaired was four years ago.

The lacrosse goal areas on Smith Field will be replaced due to damage.

In addition, Conn Pool underwent a regularly-scheduled maintenance the weekend of May 27–31. The Loyola Maintenance Department drained the pool to inspect the electrical system, clean and replaster the pool and add eye bolts for the lanes’ lines.

Besides the renovations to the athletic facilities, the Otis Elevator Company will repair the Pinney Hall elevator from June 13 through Aug. 20. The elevator has been out of service this past school year, and Otis will replace the piston that lifts the cab, according to McDermott. Otis will also upgrade all the equipment and will retouch the cab for cosmetic purposes.

The art room on the third floor of Pinney Hall will also be renovated with the addition of a new air conditioning unit, since the room currently has two kilns for the ceramics class that perform at high temperatures. Shelving in the room will also be moved around to allow for more table space and a larger class.

The Loyola Maintenance crew will also conduct its annual summer cleaning of all the classrooms and facilities. This project will occur in the last week of July and into the weeks of August. The crew will re-paint the classrooms for cosmetic purposes, shampoo the carpets, wax the floors, replace lights and wash the windows. The courtyard pavers throughout campus will also undergo a deep cleaning.

Along with the campus cleanings, Loyola will see additions to the campus this year and in the near future. A Mobile Mini workshop will also be placed in the Dewey Parking Lot right behind Burr Hall. According to McDermott this 40-foot-long workspace will provide the robotics team an area to construct their robot. The robotics team will be given a permanent workspace the following year.

A new Xavier Center building is expected to start construction in 2018, according to McDermott. The plan is currently in the design phase, and it will be followed with a fundraising phase before any construction begins.

According to McDermott other facilities such as the Hannon Theatre, the Hernandez fieldhouse, and Xavier Center will all undergo their annual maintenance inspection, cleaning and repair.
