Loyola students and female guests attended Cubchella, the first dance of the school year, on Saturday, Sept. 16, for a night of live music, dancing and food. Cubchella welcomed over 600 Loyola students and 1,000 girls.
Sophomore Liam Landon said, “Loyola’s dances always exceed my expectations. It’s so impressive that Loyola can consistently pull off such high-quality, well-executed dances. It seems like an actual music festival; ‘Cubchella’ was a fitting name.”
Director of Activities Chris Walter ’93 and student council members started planning and brainstorming for the event last year and followed up with meetings on the first week of school and subsequent weeks. This year student council members decided on the brand theme “Cubchella.” As Senior and 2017 Class President Connor Ladwig said, “We really wanted that Cubchella theme, I think, just because it has been Loyolapalooza for a long time, and it’s just good to update it and really make it our own.” Mr. Walter was in charge of hiring the companies that made the dance possible including the DJ company Groove Factor Entertainment and Z’s for catering. Student council worked hard advertising for the event, members distributed fliers at Loyola and all-girls schools around Los Angeles. Cubchella was also advertised via Loyola’s Snapchat and Instagram. Student council members welcomed guests, distributed tickets, and helped set up and break down the event.
A professional DJ from Groove Factor Entertainment as well as Miles Kenny, Mikey Bearden, and Tobias Orbin who represented the student-run Modern Poets and Composers Club (MPC), moderated by English teacher Douglas Brown, played live music and interacted with the crowd. Connor Ladwig said, “Miles, Mikey, and Tobias all DJ’d on the main stage . . . that was a huge success, they got everybody jumping. Miles and Mikey actually went into the crowd and started dancing. I think it went really well.”
Student council was keen on preserving the tradition of the first dance being a great way for freshman to get acquainted with the school, meet some new friends, and girls from other schools. Cubchella was freshmans Connor McDowell’s first Loyola dance experience. He said, “I had a lot of fun at Cubchella and I met a lot of new people. The dance will definitely be a highlight of my time at Loyola.”
