The Loyola Mothers’ Guild (LMG) and Campus Ministry will co-host the annual Mother-Son Mass and Brunch, a sold-out event expecting 600 guests, on Sunday, Feb. 28, in Xavier Center at 10 a.m, according to the LMG Communion Brunch Chairwoman Tamara Bland. This event has been a Loyola tradition since the 1940s, according to Campus Ministry Co-Director Matthew Schaeffer.
According to Bland, mothers and their sons are encouraged to arrive at 9:15 a.m. to take their mother-son photograph prior to the Mass. Sunset Photography will provide complimentary pictures.
The Mass, which will be presided over by the Rev. Fr. Stephen Barber, S.J., will begin at 10 a.m. and will last for an hour. Theology teacher Jack Crouse will be giving a reflection during the brunch.
Reflecting on last year’s service, sophomore August Smith said, “I really enjoyed the Mass and the homily. It was a special experience for me and was nice to spend the time there with my mom.”
Once the Mass has concluded, Thyme Cafe will provide a brunch of eggs, french toast, fruit and coffee to attendees.
Freshman Michael Antonnuci said, “I’m looking forward to going with my mom and older brother because I’ve heard from other students it’s a great experience. I’m expecting to connect with God a bit more and to have a nice Sunday.”
Smith said, “Last year, I enjoyed the event and am looking forward to a similar setting. I especially enjoyed the food that was catered for brunch, as it was really good.”
Bland said that she is expecting a good turnout of mothers and their sons. “It’s a wonderful day for the boys to spend with their moms. We hope to see all the senior boys, as this will be their last one,” said Bland.
