Varsity basketball prepares for St. Ignatius Tournament

SENIOR GUARD CHUKWUELOKA faces off against a Beverly Hills player in the Rose Hill Roundball Classic. Finishing in third place in the tournament, the Cubs defeated Beverly Hills 76-67.

The varsity basketball team, led by head coach Jamal Adams ’90, began their season with two tournaments. With a season record of  5-2, the Cubs recorded a third place finish at the Rose City Roundball Classic and a fifth place finish at the Sax Elliot Invitational.

After defeating West Ranch and Maranatha in the first two games of the Rose City Roundball Classic, the Cubs lost to Muir High School 72-57, their first loss of the season.

Senior guard Rasheed Clarke led the way for the Cubs with 11 points, five rebounds and three assists. The Cubs concluded the tournament on Saturday, Dec. 3, after outscoring Pasadena High School 66-53.

Sophomore guard Neil Owens led all scorers with 23 points, shooting 78 percent from the field and making all six free throws.

Following the forfeit by St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy on Dec. 5 in the first game of the Sax Elliot Invitational, the Cubs fell short to George Washington Prep 58-52 in overtime on Dec. 7. Senior forward Kevin Johnson demonstrated his presence in the paint with six points, six rebounds and three blocks.

With two tournaments in the books, the Cubs are tied with Notre Dame High School for the third best record in the Mission League.

Adams said, “I’m very impressed with what this team has done so far. They are each getting better every time they step on the court. I believe these guys can do anything, especially because this team is so deep.”

Clarke currently leads the team in scoring, averaging 11.4 points per game. He believes that with every game the team has been improving, and his goal is to win a Mission League Title.

“This is a phenomenal team doing wonderful things. Throughout the season, we have earned our stripes, and I truly believe we can win Mission League,” Clarke said.

The Cubs will play in the St. Ignatius Tournament beginning on Dec. 27 before their debut league game against rival Harvard-Westlake on Wednesday, Jan. 4.
