The varsity water polo team has concluded the 2016 season with a 5-9 loss against Orange Lutheran in the CIF Division I semi-finals. With an overall record of 23 wins and seven losses, varsity water polo looks back on their accomplishments as a team.
It is clear the greatest improvement this season was team unity and teamwork, playing not as a collection of individuals but instead as one unit. Head coach Erik Healy said, “The team unity was never stronger than the last couple of games of the season. Varsity water polo’s performance climaxed toward the end of the season, reaching their full potential as the first seed going into playoffs.”
Senior Miles Schridde said, “CIF is a new game. To get to the top you have to beat the best. It does not matter what opponent you play, it is just another wall in front of you that you have to knock down.”
Despite this loss, the team’s season-long success outweighs playoff elimination. Coach Healy said, “This season was one of the most fun years I can remember in my time as head coach at Loyola. I love the 2016 team and will always cherish the experience that they shared with me.”
Although varsity water polo fell short in reaching their goal of winning the 2016 CIF title, victory is possible in 2017. Next season, Healy confirms the team will return a strong group of experienced players as well as a very talented and unified junior varsity team.
