‘Voice of the Cubs’ John Malloy ’61, passes away

Mr. John Malloy ’61, most commonly known as ‘The Voice of the Cubs,’ passed away on Saturday, Nov. 15, after an 8-year battle with cancer. As the Loyola football announcer for 30 years, the 72-year-old alum was the brother of Mr. Tom Malloy ’57 and Mr. Mike Malloy ’66 as well as the father of Justin ’84, Emmett ’90 and Brendan ’92, and grandfather of Cole Malloy ’14 and junior Jake Malloy.

Jake grew up knowing his grandfather as a strong supporter of the football program. “He wanted to be at as many games as possible,” Jake said. “He would take the coaches to dinner, and he wanted to let them know how much he loved this community.”

Sophomore head football coach Mr. Ric Flores first met Mr. Malloy in 1983 when coaching Mr. Malloy’s son, Justin. “He was a warm and welcoming guy,” Flores said. “He was always there for the team, a true ‘Man for Others.’”

Former varsity football head coach Mr. Steve Grady ’61 coached Mr. Malloy’s sons under the Loyola football program.

Mr. Grady said, “He was a gentle, kind, and giving man to the football program, and he stayed that way after I retired. He was a friend to everyone that he encountered.”

Assistant Principal for Supervision Dr. Ricardo Pedroarias ’84 was a classmate of Mr. Malloy’s son, Justin. Dr. Pedroarias said, “He wanted to learn something about the starters and of the other players,” Dr. Pedroarias said. “There was a guy up there that wasn’t a entertainer. He would genuinely call out the players in a funny manner as well.”

Principal Frank Kozakowski was a football coach from 1978 to 1994 when Mr. Malloy’s sons attended Loyola. Kozakowski said, “He was constantly a supporter and a wonderful person to the Loyola community.”
