Led by head coach Levi Line, the freshman football team concluded its season on Thursday, Nov. 3, with a 41-14 win against Notre Dame at home. The Cubs finished with a 6-4 season record, including a 3-3 Mission League record.
The Cubs began their season with a three game winning streak, beating Highland, St. Augustine and Santa Margarita in the first few weeks of the season. Despite losing the next three games, the Cubs bounced back, winning three of their last four games. Over the course of 10 games, the Cubs averaged 28.8 points per game while only allowing an average of 24.6 to their opponents.
In their debut against Highland High School on Aug. 25, the Cubs recorded a 34-0 shutout, the largest margin of victory during their season. The Cubs’ closest game was a narrow victory 19-14 over Crespi on Thursday, Oct. 13.
According to team captain and nose guard Barret Kelly, the team has a lot of heart and passion for the game, which has helped them succeed and battle through tough games. He also identified quarterback Davis Warren, running back and linebacker Kevin Parada and wide receiver Dominic Belisle as key players throughout the season.
Reflecting on the team’s development since the first day of practice, Line said, “The team has really been able to gel together. They play football with enthusiasm and it shows on the field. Since day one, the team has been working together and has a lot of chemistry.”
