The freshman basketball team, led by head coach Frank Peters and assistant coach Jalal Hazzard, currently holds a 5-3 record after a 4-0 finish in the City of Angels Tournament and a 1-3 finish in the Los Alamitos Tournament. The Cubs will face rival Harvard-Westlake in their Mission League debut on Wednesday, Jan. 4.
In the City of Angels Tournament, the Cubs defeated Palos Verdes, Narbonne and Peninsula High School before beating Mira Costa High School by a score of 57-47 in the final game of the tournament on Saturday, Dec. 3.
The Cubs began the Los Alamitos Tournament on Monday, Dec. 5, with a 70-30 victory against Mayfair High School. This 40-point margin of victory marks the Cubs’ largest point spread of the season thus far. The Cubs lost the following three games of the tournament by nine points or less, including a 63-65 overtime loss to Orange Lutheran High School on Thursday, Dec. 8.
Although the Cubs are entering winter break with a three-game losing streak, the Cubs’ losses have come down to relatively close scores, which Peters attributes to the team’s defense.
“The team is very defensive orientated. Not only do they prevent the other team from scoring, but they also prevent the other team’s ball movement which restricts the offense. The team causes many of the other teams to get shot-clock violations, a stat that is usually unheard of,” Peters said.
Some team players, such as freshman forward Jonathan Jackson, believe the Cubs’ early success is accredited to their team camaraderie and enthusiasm.
“The team competes with passion and has lots of spirit. Whether or not the players are in, they will still be enthusiastic and cheer for their teammates, ” Jackson said.
The Cubs will continue their season on Monday, Dec. 26, with the Redondo Tournament. The Cubs will face St. Bernard High School at 7:30 p.m. at Redondo Union High School.
