Freshman Soccer Extends Win Streak With Win Over Burroughs

The freshman soccer team, led by head coach Jorge Torres and assistant coach Dan McCarthy, is currently 13-4-1. The young squad has beaten teams such as Cathedral in a 1-0 win and Paramount 2-1 in the championship game of the West Torrance Tournament.

Torres said, “Well, we started off slow. We started off tying and then losing to Redondo, and then we figured it out. We started playing with each other. We started finding our rhythm, went on an 8 game winning streak and won the West Torrance Tournament.”

The team has had several high scoring games against teams like Peninsula 7-1, South Torrence 6-0 and North Hollywood 9-0.

Malcolm Hawkins, a striker on the freshmen team, attributed the team’s success to coach Torres, saying, “The team had some rough patches in the beginning of the season, but we found a way to pull through and play as a unit thanks to Coach Torres’ great guidance and coaching.”

Although the boys have been playing great recently, Coach Torres commented on the bad parts of the season as well. Torres said, “Well, we have our ups and down. Sometimes, we’ll play Loyola soccer very well and other times we’ll play the style of the other team.”

The team has scored 60 goals thus far in the season, and 9 of their 13 wins are shutouts.

Freshman team captain and defender, Jack Crawford said, “We are excited for the rest of the season. Our goal is to be 20-4-1, and the team is really coming together. We have been practicing really hard, doing our 60s, and we’re willing to do whatever is takes to win and play great soccer.”
