JV Cubs anticipate first basketball tournament

The junior varsity basketball team, consisting of 14 sophomores and one freshman, defeated Fairfax High School in their season debut. After winning 57-54, the Cubs look forward to continuing their success with the City of Angels Tournament on Dec. 5.

Sophomore power forward Alex Blanco said he is anticipating the team coming and working together, as well as how players will perform on the court.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the growth of the team and our improvements through the season,” said Blanco. “I think we have a very good chance to win Mission League with under five losses for the season.”

With almost every player being a returnee of last year’s freshman team, the Cubs are familiar with each other’s play styles and are expecting themselves to do well and improve as a team.

Sophomore center James Keefe, one of the proposed leaders on the team, said, “Our team chemistry is great, and we are poised for a successful season”

Although all players expect some ups and downs throughout the season, they are excited by the competition and enter the season positively.

Sophomore center Liam Watson said, “Our team is very strong coming into this season, with our biggest strength being our depth and versatility. We have many players who can play several positions and our bench does not have a drop off of skill like most other teams.” With the team’s final roster consisting of the players with the highest skills and ability, all players on the team say they anticipate a successful season.

Overall, Keefe said the team looks forward to a challenging season and the opportunity to grow together.
