JV Teams begin in-person workouts

On Monday, Sep. 21, some junior varsity and freshmen teams began practices and workouts two weeks after varsity teams had returned to campus for theirs.

Head Athletic Director Chris O’Donnell said, “Most fall sports teams including water polo, volleyball, football and cross country are going to begin workouts.”

He then specified, “Water polo started September the 7th, with all returning players working out. Varsity volleyball started last week, and lower levels will start in October.”

In an article from the Loyola Cubs mobile app, RepU, he noted, “CIF Southern Section on Jul. 20 decided that no games would be played for any sport in the fall. The CIF-SS has moved football, cross country, water polo and volleyball to a winter season schedule.”

Thus, coaches and staff are only allowing practices and workout sessions but no games during these upcoming months, and they are using this time to get players ready for their seasons.

Head varsity football coach Drew Casani said, “JV teams start this Monday, practicing Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.”

Due to the spread of COVID-19, players are not allowed to use balls, blockers, or be in contact, and the teams are currently waiting for updates from the L.A. County Department of Health regarding the use of practice equipment. In the meantime, players are learning playbooks and getting in shape with physical conditioning, sometimes on campus and sometimes via Zoom.

JV and a few freshmen teams hope to begin games in the winter season. Players and coaches are all waiting for updates from the CIF and public health officials so they can make plans to move forward.
