Varsity Cross-Country Places First in Final Mission League Meet

On Saturday, Oct. 21, the varsity cross-country team ran in the 70th annual Mt. Sac cross-country Invitational Meet.  The Cubs finished with the fourth fastest time in the event’s 70 years.

Senior Corey Kumamoto ran the fastest time in the 2.93-mile race with a time of 15:33, and junior Hudson Godfrey finished second in the heat five seconds later with a time of 15:38.

Head Coach Lalo Diaz said, “What makes this team truly special is the leadership, especially from the seniors.  The team knows when to fool around and have fun. However, once practice starts they know when to dial it in, focus and work hard.”

The Cubs are currently ranked third in the CIF Southern Section behind national leader Great Oak in Temecula after a first place finish in the Mission League Finals on Nov. 1 in Crescenta Valley.

Senior co-captain Shane Bissell came in first place in the three mile with a time of 15:30. The Cubs finished in the top seven spots, beating out runners from Harvard-Westlake, Crespi, Notre Dame and Chaminade.

Senior David McAndrews said, “At Mt. Sac, Shane led the way, and the team followed behind quickly. Our packing is second to none, and it will lead us far into CIF and beyond.”

As the season ends, the Cubs look forward to the final CIF meet of the season.

Diaz said, “The expectation going into the playoffs is to compete at a high level, we showed a measure of what we can do at Mt. Sac and we are expecting a good showing at CIF.”

The CIF prelims take place tomorrow, Nov. 11, at Riverside City College.  If the Cubs advance, they will run in the CIF Finals a week later on Nov. 18.  The last meet of the season is the CIF State Finals on Nov. 25 in Fresno, assuming the Cubs qualify.
