If you’re interested in science fiction and rock music, the band Starset, and especially their new album Vessels, is likely to pique your interest. I personally started listening to the band in 2014 when they released their first album, Transmissions. Starset’s music style immediately appealed to me because of the interesting and unique direction they take when combining elements of science fiction and music. On Jan. 20, the band came out with their sophomore album, Vessels.
The band consists of four Ohio natives: Dustin Bates, Ron DeChant, Brock Richards, and Adam Gilbert. Bates is lead vocalist, DeChant is lead bassist and keyboardist, Richards is on guitar and Gilbert is on drums.
Now, to be completely honest, this album immediately made its way to one of the top places in my favorite albums. The album definitely does not disappoint, with fifteen tracks of the same full-throttle sci-fi sound that their fans will surely recognize from their first album.
At the start of the album, Vessels throws listeners into a different orbit than Transmissions. The prelude leading up to the first song, “Satellite,” places the listener in an unknown, mysterious space alongside the band. The emotions that permeate through the music are also present translate smoothly to the listener.
My personal favorites on the album are at its emotional crescendo in “Gravity of You,” “Back to Earth” and “Last to Fall.” Throughout the album, the listeners are placed in the shoes of space explorers as well as given a unique take on typical rock love ballads. Much like the space explorers that inspire their music, Starset takes fearless leaps in using cutting-edge music technology.
